The Miracle Began Under a Tree

E-mail Print PDF

"Together we can do this; together we will do this," is the rallying cry for Nyamphande Village, which began in 1996 as a school with 15 children that met under a large tree. In that same year,an orphanage was begun to provide a home for five children whose parents had been lost to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and whose grandparents were no longer able to care for them.

As Nyamphande Village reached its 13th anniversary in March 2009, there were 80 children living in the orphanage and more than 700 attending the school. All of the children are fed three meals each day.

In addition, a small health clinic, which was initially designed to provide services to the students only, has also
become a community clinic because of the dire need in the area. Also, a growing portion of the ministry's property is being cultivated for the growing of crops, and a fishpond has been stocked, with the ultimate goal of Nyamphande Village being able to produce most of its own food.

The orphanage and school president, John Mambo, wrote, "Our greatest wish is to see the children of Nyamphande graduate and become what they wish in future as the sky is the limit. Further, we would like to see a day when every child will be called off the streets and the infamous phrase 'street children' becomes a term of the past."
